They haven’t been seen much in the past few decades, but tradtional Maori sports and games made a comeback this week at Whakatu Marae and Omaka Marae.
NPA funding saw 20 people attend the two-day workshops where Dr Ihirangi Heke revived some old gems like Ti-uru ( a combination of basketball, American football, and rugby) and Mu-torere (a bit like Twister)
NPA Tu Healthy coordinator Luke Katu said the workshops were a huge success.
“The feedback that came back was everyone thoroughly enjoyed it,” Luke said.
“They want more workshops in a similar vein. They just really loved going back to the tradional sports that they never heard of before.
“We hope that by re-introducing these games, it will encourage Maori to get out use these traditional sports and games to participate in more physical activity.
“We had school teachers, sports coaches, community organisations that work with Maori whanau and we also had main stream providers.
“They will now take back the learnings so they can give Maori the options of using traditional games. ”
