Programme moved Marlborough

Marlborough On the Move has been hailed as a successful, life-changing programme by an independent evaluation team.

The NPA funded initiative has been credited as the catalyst for getting hundreds of previously sedentary people back into action, in a report by the Auckland University School of Population Health.

“MOM has indeed been a catalyst resulting in hundreds of Marlburians moving and having fun too,” the report said.

“The MOM programmes have been designed to meet the needs of a wide group of participants including the specific target groups.

“It has also raised the profile of Marlborough Stadium 2000 as a quality provider of large scale physical activity programmes both on and off site.

“MOM has reduced the barriers to physical activity by providing programmes that are of no cost and accessible to all; including those who live rurally, those who cannot commit to regular times and those who do not identify with sports.

“MOM has been life changing for some individuals and a considerable number now intend to make ‘being physically active’ a way of life.”

Stadium 2000 programmes Manager Kirsty Mattison agrees that the programme has had a deep impact on participants’ lives.

“If it wasn’t for MOM, a lot of these people would never have come in (to the stadium),” she said.

“It’s was more about activating people into activity and changing people’s mind set.

“MOM made them comfortable in that environment and now they’re happy to be there.

“For some, it has been a truly life changing experience.

“It’s really fulfilling to see so many people sticking at it and taking a positive approach towards an active lifestyle.”

The year-long relationship with the NPA has ended but Kirsty said the MOM spirit would continue with around 40 per cent of participants still active.

“We’ve got new programmes up and running where the users pay a small fee,” she said.

“We still offer an aqua active programme and we’ve still got programmes reaching regional communities.

“For a lot of people, MOM was their inspiration, but now they’ve continued on and are doing something in their own community or are out their on their own.”
