Marlburians now have support to develop their cooking skills thanks to the innovative Get Cooking programme. Like the name suggests, Get cooking is about providing the tools and education to enable people to get into the kitchen and be confident to cook a meal for themselves, family &/or friends.
With support from community organisations, Marlborough’s Get Cooking Coordinator, Lynn Weir, has now trained 8 organisations. “This is a great programme that provides support and develops new relationships with informal and practical sessions” says Lynn.
Community Dietitian, Barbara Ryan, facilitates the nutrition support component of the course. “It’s about offering the skills and support to the community, and with the Train the Trainer approach, more people can access support to confidently make healthier lifestyle choices”.
Crossroads Trust and Picton Church (foodbank) have opened their doors to support this programme in Marlborough and Picton by allowing the use of their kitchen for organisations to host Get Cooking classes. All volunteer trainers will be fully supported by Lynn as the coordinator, with plans to form a support network.
Organisations which are now fully trained to support their community with cooking classes are: Picton Community Hub, Awatere Community Hub, Crossroads Trust, Supporting Families Marlborough, Maataa Waka, Richmond NZ, Nativity Church and Methodist (Wesley centre). The classes are free, thanks to funding from NMDHB’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Programme.
