Getting the produce for Year 7 and 8 food technology classes at Parklands School in Motueka no longer means a trip to the Supermarket.

The school has worked with the Motueka Technology Education Centre and made amazing progress in developing waste land outside the Centre.

Included in the project, developed by Associate Principal Brian Barton, are raised garden beds, fire pits, hangi pits, outdoor tables, a perimeter fence with gate, and an all weather surface.

Despite a run of wet weather, the planned objectives were met, resulting in an outstanding example of what can be achieved on a limited budget (see photo below).

“Students and staff will work in their own time to cultivate, plant and tidy the new gardens,” said Brian, “this project develops life skills and demonstrates self-sufficiency and sustainability values in action.”
