“We planted the corn, watered the corn, picked the corn, prepared the corn, cooked the corn and then the best bit of all…. We ate the corn!!” That was the catch-cry at Hira Rural Kindergarten after a successful harvest from their edible garden.
After planting their vegetables the children were very impatient to see results so just for fun they painted pictures of colourful vegetables and pretended to grow them. Tricking everyone was half the fun!
Thanks to the generosity of a Kindergarten parent who donated seeds for a pumpkin growing competition, the children planted the seeds in pots to take home and care for. Once the pumpkins had grown to full size the children brought them back to kindergarten for a measure up.
Cooking classes were held by a chef (parent) who showed parents and community members how to cook some exciting new healthy recipes and proved that learning is not just for children at Kindergarten, according to head teacher Trish Cooper,.
A gardening workshop was held to encourage families to establish their own gardens at home. A horticulture tutor at NMIT, another parent (!) answered gardening questions from the many participants.
Kindergarten helpers were invited to a special lunch at their ‘outdoor café’ under the oak tree, to thank them for their contributions.
