We’re Officially “Safe At The Top”

It’s official…. Nelson is the 250th international ‘Safe at the Top’ city.

At a designation celebration recently, the mayors of Nelson and Tasman were awarded plaques to reflect the prestigious award.

Head of Distribution & Delivery, Insurance and Prevention Services ACC, Mr Keith Newton says “safety isn’t a nice to have, it’s a need to have.”

Being a safe community is about people, leadership and innovation, says the Director of Safe Communities Foundation of New Zealand, Dr Carolyn Coggin.  She says there is one incidence of violence every eight minutes.

“Nelson Tasman is the first and only community to ever include outdoor safety, racism and emerging communities in their submission,” says Dr Coggan.

Safe at the Top is a collaborative community effort to improve safety, with support from both Nelson City and Tasman District Councils and over 80 community organisations.
