The Whooping cough (Pertussis) outbreak in Nelson Tasman is now widespred with increasing numbers of cases in local schools and preschools, as well as among adults in the community.
Although having whooping cough or being vaccinated protects most people for many years against becoming ill, neither gives 100% or life-long protection. Unimmunised individuals who have not previously had whooping cough are highly likely to become infected in a school or early childhood setting.
The outbreak is likely to continue into the summer holidays and cases are also increasing in other areas in New Zealand.
