We are the Nelson Marlborough Nutrition and Physical Activity Programme - call us NPA.
We like to think of ourselves as the Batman of the health sector. Okay, so we don’t wear capes , but our mission requires a superhero effort.
to be the first district in New Zealand, and one of the first in the world, to turn around the obesity epidemic
Rates of obesity have been increasing for 25 years – and this trend is continuing.
A fresh approach, fresh ideas were needed.
Showing tremendous foresight and leadership, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board created NPA as a five-year programme to coordinate the local response to what has become the scurge of our times.
The challenge of improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and reducing obesity is one for our whole society. These are not problems the health sector can solve on its own. Change will occur only through the organised efforts society.
And here we have tremendous strengths. We have a history of government, local government and community organisations working together across many of the areas that influence nutrition and physical activity.
NPA builds on these strengths.
The core to our success is to work with family/whanau across the whole life course, improving environments and influencing behaviour so that people find it easy to make healthy choices about how they live their lives.
We believe we can reverse the trend.
Many of us already choose to live in Nelson Marlborough because of the opportunities for a healthy lifestyle. Much of our economy is based on quality food and active living. We are already the most active district in New Zealand.
We are a family friendly region and want our children to grow up fit and well, enjoying good nutrition.
We have a long way to go to achieve our vision but we are starting from a position of relative strength.
And we love a challenge. If not us, then who?
