Start with your toe. Dip it in tentatively. Then shudder and as the shivers shimmy through your body. That’s the hard way to do. Otherwise known as New Zealand water torture.
Our cold currents and steely streams usually keep swimmers out until summer is on the horizon. While people start returning to laze on the beach on sunny spring days, most people don’t return to the water until November.
But they are missing out on what is a truly exhilerating feeling. There’s nothing like the sensation of diving through crystal clear cold water. The initial sting. The gasp for breath. The warm relief that follows. Think of it this way:
you’ll never feel more alive then after a swim in cold water
The trick is to be swift, determined and resolute that it’s not that cold, you are going in and you will enjoy it.
Now take a deep breath, don’t stop to think about it, and charge …..
If you enjoyed the challenge and want to stay wet, you’re in luck. The Nelson-Marlborough region has a group for just about every type of swimming included competition, recreational, learners, ocean, surf club, masters and triathlon.
