It’s as Kiwi as the pavlova, Phar Lap and Mt Ruapehu – backyard cricket is an essential part our summer.
Essential Equipment:
Tennis Ball
Bat, piece of drift wood, fence paling etc
Stumps, bin, chilly bin
General Rules:
(guide only, most people make up rules to suit their backyard, skills and player numbers)
Can’t get out first ball.
One hand, one bounce – you can dismiss a batsman by catching the ball in one hand on the first bounce
Automatic wicketkeeper – an edge behind is automatically out
No LBW – the leg before wicket rule does not exist in backyard cricket
Six and out - a batsman is out when they hit it over the fence or into a thick bush or anywhere pre-determined by the players
