Active Transport on the move

Nelson already has more people walking and cycling than anywhere else in the country and if current plans are anything to go by its going to get bigger.

Nelson’s cycle paths proposal has progressed to the second round of funding consideration to receive part of $50M NZ Cycle Trail project. If successful the money will be used to build a loop that leads from Nelson to the Coppermine Saddle and back, and a second loop from Richmond down the Motueka Valley to Motueka and back.   Nelson is also in the box seat for a share of the $7M Model Communities Funding.  This NZTA funding is to develop a "model community" for walking and cycling

Go By Bike Day breakfasts attracted nearly 1000 people in Nelson and Tasman.  Plans are afoot to run a celebration of walking and cycling in October on Rocks Road.

Pizza: it's good for you

We've taken a quirky approach to health promotion by recommending everyone eat pizza. No, we haven't gone mad - it's actually a brilliant idea...

Local health experts are prescribing pizza as the latest step to help fight obesity across the top of the South.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is encouraging everyone to add the crusty treat to their diet during the Autumn Challenge. click here for full story.

Nelson's best breastfeeds on show

Nelson's beauty was showcased in the national breastfeeding photo competition with the top two pictures from the Upper South Island category featuring a local flavour.

Christchurch's Tia Andrews took out the division with a great shot overlooking Fifeshire Rock, while Nelson's Tia Andrews was the runner up with shot at the Lakes. click here for photos

Nickie makes time to change her life

Nickie Pharland was so busy giving her time to others that she never had time for herself.

But after joining Marlborough on the Move, the mother-of-three and veritable volunteer has re-ordered her priorities to make room for some Nickie-time - and it's changed her life. click here for full story

MSS kick off Autumn Challenge

MSS principal Michael Harrison said the junior school literally kicked off the campaign with a game of soccer with red balls before adding spinach to their edible garden. click here for full story

Victory turning up the heat in Autumn

Great tater debater

It's a a potato in a bucket - but not as you know it. Our modest office growing competition has attracted an impressive 260 entrants. Most are local office workers from 25 different oranisations, but we've attracted some interest from Wellington and even a Year 7 class from Levin.

Something tells us this won't be your simple spud standoff.

With so many keen growers, we expect this to bloom into a full contact chip-fest.

So send us pictures of your buckets, your team and anything connected to the competition and we'll put them on our website.

Stay tuned to for more updates and happy growing.

ps: It is illegal to sabotage your workmate's bucket - but you can think nasty thoughts about it, if you believe that'll give you the edge.

Walking the talk

The NMDHB clocked up an amazing 5279km for Bike Wise Month:

February saw a fierce rivalry pedalled out across the streets of Nelson. The race for bragging rights. Click here for full story

National champion

SARA Gane, daughter of our Marlborough programme manager Jenni, took on the country's best swimmers and won this month.

The 11-year-old is officially one New Zealand's top young swimmers claiming the gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke at the NZ Junior Swimming Championships.

Well done Sara! A fantastic effort for a local swimmer, from a tiny club, to take on the big city clubs and win.

Here’s Helen

The Autumn Challenge is on!

We've distributed red resource packs through 26 schools across the top of the south for the latest installment of our public education campaign.

That's enough to reach 5000 local families who are in the most need of help.

We've designed the resources to provide tools and ideas on how to feed the family and get them active in ways that don't take a lot of time or money.

And proving that healthy doesn't have to mean boring, we've made sure that the ideas are fun and/or tasty.

It's actually quite brilliant when you take a close look at it.

It's a novel approach to health promotion that inspires families to look after themselves. We're talking gardening and cooking, dancing and games.

We give them the tools, without the lecture.

There's no fingerwagging, or guiltripping here.

Our message is simple, here's a few ideas that are fun and can make a real difference for your family.
