Here's Helen...

L-R:  Helen, Robyn Dunmore, Irene Minchin (Spring Challenge 2010, 12 hr)

We here at NPA believe that setting goals is a big part of maintaining motivation and that the journey towards your goals can be just as rewarding as the achievement.

But what happens when you fall short, miss the goal or don't make it?

I experienced it first hand this month when the culmination of four months training for a race still resulted in a DNF (did not finish) after an epic equipment fail and 7 hours effort.

Sometimes despite all the planning and preparation, things don't turn out as you expect and it becomes disheartening.  But what about the opportunities this also creates?  Albert Einstein once said "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity"

During this race there was plenty of opportunity to learn a lot about bike repairs; about dealing with self-doubt, and about teamwork.

If you've experienced falling short of your goals, don't give up.  Reassess them and above all, set some new ones.  And, if you're in doubt as to whether you're 'ready'  remember that "Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible" (Anthony Robbins)

There really is no time like the present ...... and me?  I'm enrolled in a bike mechanics course!

Until next time, Helen
