Healthy Communities September
Thoughts... Spring is almost here and the sight of the daffodils poking their heads above ground all over the region are a sure sign it's not far away - YAHOO! A topic close to our hearts this month is Farmers Markets. After reading the Department of Human Nutrition (University of Otago) Information Package on Estimated Food Costs for 2011, we really sat up and took notice of the price of fruit and vegetables at local supermarkets. Telegraph cucumbers marked at the princely sum of $4.99 due to not being a seasonal vegie at this time of year? Compare that to the price at our local Farmers Market of $2.50! This of course got us thinking.... why would anyone want to pay $5 for a cucumber? Nelson and Marlborough both host a weekly Farmers Market, and there are also green-grocers located around the region, not to mention the weekend market, all of whom are far cheaper to purchase fruit and vegetables from than your local one-stop-shop. If that doesn't appeal, there's always the option of growing your own vegetables at home. Vegies can even be grown successfully in pots if you're not an avid gardener! Speaking of vegie plots, Tahunanui School's blogspot was brought to our attention this week - (check it out at http://tahunanui-ediblegardens.blogspot.com/). We think it's great that they are blogging about their 'Kids Edible Garden' at the school and are thrilled to be able to follow their progress through regular updates. Are there any other schools out there who are inspired to set up blogs to document their own edible garden journey? Not only is it a great way to log your progress, tips, successes and celebrations, but you can motivate other schools to follow your lead. So, how 'bout it? Let us know if you have an edible garden blog and we'll add your link to our newsletter and follow your progress...... Go on - what are you waiting for? Contact us: Jenni Gane/Maria Baxter
