Maori health status

An NPA funded survey has identified a number of areas where the NMDHB has opportunities to improve Maori health incomes.

Primary care, smoking, diabetes and cardiovascular risks, breastfeeding, immunisation, physical activity and nutrition, oral health and cultural responsiveness were all identified as potential targets for action in the study, Maori in Nelson Marlborough: 2009. click here for the full report

Mum4mum

New mums can now access an extra tier of breastfeeding support in their own homes, thanks to an NPA initiated and funded programme. Five women have completed training for the Mum4Mum programme in Marlborough and are now available to provide one-to-one counselling to new mums. Counsellors will also soon be available in Nelson. click here for more details

Connor's on the pace

For most of the 450 entrants, the gravelly path at Montana Vineyard Brancott Estate simply marked the start of the Marlborough Kids Duathlon. But for Connor Hammerich, that gravelly path marked the end of a journey that lead him back to self belief. click here for full story

Good luck Luke!

It was with a tinge of sadness that we farewelled NPA team member Luke Katu last month. After more than a year with the NPA as Tu Healthy coordinator, Luke joined the Nelson Bays Primary Health Organisation as their new Kaitakawaenga Maori Health Coordinator. click here for full story

NPA springing and strutting

LEE PUNT has marshalled the NPA troops and is leading our Spring, Strut, Stride effort. Five weeks into the programme, we've covered 1515km which sees us about half way between Haast and Franz Joseph - not bad for a bunch of office workers.

Newsletter #16
November, 2009

Here’s Helen

Congratulations to our Mayors Alistair Sowman and Richard Kempthorne who successfully took on the Winter Challenge.

Their support helped us build the profile of the campaign, while their continued involved helped encourage local kids to take on the challenge.

Well done, and thank you.

I was truly sorry to see our Tu Healthy coordinator and friend Luke Katu leave the NPA ranks last month - but we should all be glad that he hasn't left the industry.

Luke's new role as Kaitakawaenga Maori Health Coordinator will see him work to improve Maori primary health care outcomes.

It's the role in which Luke sees himself making the most difference.

His humour, skills, dedication and friendship will be dearly missed around the NPA offices.

It seems our loss, is the Nelson Bays PHO's gain.

Good luck Luke!

Helen Steenbergen
NPA Programme Director.
