NPA walking the talk.....

Queen Charlotte Classic

Just the mention of the name Queen Charlotte Classic is enough to strike fear into most athletes' hearts - but for NPA programme director Helen Steenbergen, the individual multisport event was great personal test.

Helen set goals, put in the hard yards at training and completed the 14km trail run, 30km road ride and 8km sea kayak in 3hr54mins59sec.

Although physically exhausted, she was beaming (see pic above) with a huge sense of accomplishment when she crossed the finishing line at Picton last month.

Talk about leading from the front...well done Helen!

Run Mahana

NPA administration and support officer Lee Punt took on the mighty Run Mahana half marathon walk, completing the 21km walk in 3hrs 6mins and 51secs. Well done Lee!

Helen, Richard and Adam took part in the 10km run and it was no surprise that Helen beat home both the boys, barely raising a sweat. Richard was next across the line with Adam limping home in last.

To borrow a line from Australian folk singer John Butler 'It's now who breaks the ribbon boy, it's how you get across'.

Spring, strut, stride

The NPA Spring Strut Stride team clocked up a grand total of 2035km during the 6-week event - falling 35km short of completing a circuit of the South Island. None the less it encouraged us all to get daily exercise and challenged us to keep increasing duration and intensity of our activities.

Summer Challenge

The NPA launched the Summer Challenge with a game of Backyard Cricket in Marlborough. It was about celebrating all the great things about summer - sunny days, barbecues, cricket - only problem was it rained.

We got soaked - but we had fun doing it.

Newsletter #17
December, 2009

Here’s Helen

And so this is Christmas...the one time of the year where it's almost acceptable to binge on fruit cake and eat chocolates for breakfast.

At the NPA we have a saying - a bit of the bad with a whole lot of the good.

So enjoy your treats - it's been a hard year and we all deserve to enjoy ourselves in whatever way we choose.

If you're drinking alcohol, keep up the water as well.

If you're feeling over-full take a family walk.

If you're going back for your third dessert, try the fruit this time.

Most importantly, have a happy, healthy break.

It's been a great 12 months and with your help, we've achieved a lot.

Thanks for all your support and I look forward to working with you again next year.

So from all the NPA team, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

See you in 2010.

Helen Steenbergen
NPA Programme Director.
